How it all started
My journey into web development started by accident many years ago when I set up (or attempted to set up) a football news company. To provide football news in the 21st century, first of all you need a solid website. Money was tight and so instead of paying a professional to do it for me, I set off on a mission to build one myself. I chose to do it on Wordpress (a drag and drop page builder) as I did not know how to code at the time. The result was a poorly designed heap of rubbish.
Despite the terrible website I kept posting my football news articles, when one day, I stumbled upon a digital marketing agency’s advertisement. By this point, I had saved up a bit of money with the intention of paying to get a better site built. I gave the company a call and agreed on a £1,500 fee for a Wordpress site that I could manage myself. The result was a slow and clunky mess of a website. It was so bad it had to be rebuilt from scratch.
Turning Point
I decided to learn HTML and CSS and hand-code the new website myself. I ended up with an extremely fast and secure website.
The football news company eventually folded, but through this experience, I realised that many small business owners were in a difficult position when it comes to online presence and websites. They don’t have the skills nor time to build something decent themselves, and when they do decide to work with an agency, they often get missold by someone who takes advantage of their lack of technical knowledge. The agencies who do do things properly are often out of their price range and require thousands of pounds up front. That’s why I created Longnewton Web Design.
